A Day With Cat
Cat meanders down the stairs
He reaches bottom, says his prayers
And bites the dog ~ then tears away
A grand beginning for the day.
A window, open just so wide
Allows the cat to slip outside
A stealthy leap to pliant loam
And Cat begins his daily roam
A robin tugging at a worm
Which does its best to tug and squirm
Makes Cat’s eyes narrow into slits
He crouches down among the nits
Then SPROING! he launches into air
But so does bird to Cat’s despair
He lands on worm and stalks away
Intent on finding other prey
Above his head he hears a buzz
He sees a little ball of fuzz
In black and yellow zooming by
He swats and yelps a mewling cry
A bee has given him a sting
For all his efforts: suffering
Cat pouts and licks his wounded paw
Then, limping slightly, wanders on
Until he reaches Willow Street
Where pitter-pat he hears the feet
Of gentle, little Alice Bright
Who picks him up and holds him tight
With softest words she speaks of love
Of suns and moons and stars above
Until it’s time for his escape
And Cat runs off under a gate
Into the woods, where, by the brook
He spies a little Cat-sized nook
And settles down among the leaves
To doze the little dream he weaves
Then hours later, there’s a noise
The noise belongs to little boys
Who’ve come across Cat’s hiding place
And joyfully the boys give chase
And so they run, across the lea
Along the stream, alive and free
But Cat has had enough today
Of hunts and cuddles, naps and play
Just one thing left before he curls
Into the armchair’s cozy swirls
His tummy rumbles as he lopes
Across the lawn with fervent hopes
Of someone spooning him a dish
Of something wonderful ~ it’s fish!
He quickly gobbles up the trout
And daintily he cleans his snout
So sleepily he winks and yawns
Then purrs himself to sleep til dawn.
